‎Visionary Leadership Inspiring Transformation and Progress

Transformational Leadership Inspiring Growth, Community, and Excellence

Mayor Derrick R. Wood has served as a visionary leader and community advocate in Dumfries, Virginia, since 2012. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, entrepreneur, and civic leader, Mayor Wood brings a deep commitment to empowering people and driving transformative growth.

His public service journey began in 2012 when he made history by winning a Town Council seat as a write-in candidate. In 2018, he was elected Mayor, becoming a driving force behind Dumfries’ transformation into a regional leader in economic growth, transparency, and opportunity.

Under his leadership, Dumfries has experienced unprecedented momentum—tripling the town’s budget, attracting major private investment, and expanding services that directly benefit residents and small businesses. In October 2025, S&P Global Ratings assigned Dumfries its first-ever municipal credit rating, “AA- (stable outlook),” reflecting strong fiscal management and a resilient economic base.

Key Accomplishments and Visionary LeadershipEconomic Development & Infrastructure

  • Waterfront District land acquisition: Finalized the purchase of the Campbell (Campbell Junkyard/Salvage Yard) property—161 acres along Quantico Creek—for $3.9 million, securing the anchor for a new Waterfront District focused on recreation, eco-tourism, small business growth, and heritage.
  • First-ever municipal bond rating: S&P Global assigned Dumfries an AA- (stable) issuer credit rating, a fiscal milestone that validates long-term stewardship and strengthens future borrowing power.
  • Brownfields funding for transformation: Secured a $1 million EPA Brownfields Multipurpose grant to support assessment, cleanup planning, and reuse along Quantico Creek and at the Clyde Washington Community Center—key to advancing the Waterfront vision.
  • Route 1 (Fraley Boulevard) widening: Advanced a multi-jurisdictional project to widen and modernize U.S. 1 with bike/ped facilities and a new bridge over Quantico Creek to reduce flooding—funded through NVTA/SMART SCALE and administered with Prince William County and VDOT.
  • Economic engines & jobs:
Opened Rosie’s Gaming Emporium (2021), creating 100+ jobs and new recurring revenue for the Town.
Ongoing hiring and expansion at The Rose Gaming Resort further boosts local employment and hospitality.
  • Branding & business climate: Championed Destination Dumfries and “Don’t drive through Dumfries—drive to Dumfries,” aligning investment, placemaking, and tourism.
