Mayor's Jan 2025 Council Meeting Remarks

As we begin tonight’s meeting, I want to first express our thoughts and prayers for everyone impacted by the devastating fires in Los Angeles. Our hearts go out to all the families and communities affected, and we stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time.

Let me also take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. May 2025 be a year filled with growth, progress, and unity as we work together to create a brighter future for Dumfries

January is a month of reflection, celebration, and service. As we approach Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we are reminded of his profound legacy—a legacy rooted in equality, justice, and a commitment to serving others. In that spirit, I encourage everyone to attend the Oratorical Contest hosted by the Prince William County Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., on Saturday, January 18. This inspiring event will feature talented middle and high school finalists sharing their voices and perspectives, showcasing the brilliance and creativity of our youth.

I also want to acknowledge the Divine Nine organizations celebrating their Founders’ Days this month. These organizations, with their long-standing traditions of service, scholarship, and leadership, have had a profound impact in communities across the nation and right here in Dumfries:

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., founded on January 15, 1908 – celebrating 117 years in 2025.
  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded on January 13, 1913 – celebrating 112 years in 2025.
  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., founded on January 9, 1914 – celebrating 111 years in 2025.
  • Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., founded on January 16, 1920 – celebrating 105 years in 2025.

These organizations continue to exemplify excellence in service, mentorship, and empowerment, helping to shape better futures for so many.

This year, one of my top priorities is to continue working closely with our youth and the agencies that serve them. I am especially excited about a new initiative in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club: bringing a hydro garden to our community. This project will provide an opportunity for our youth to learn about gardening, sustainability, and the importance of healthy, well-balanced meals.

The hydro garden, combined with a course on nutrition and cooking, will empower our young people with practical skills for healthy living. Once the garden begins producing, the fresh food it yields will be available not just to the Boys and Girls Club members but also to families in our community, reinforcing our commitment to health and wellbeing for all.

As we continue our work, let me reaffirm our shared vision for Dumfries: a town with a thriving downtown, a well-managed government, and a community of engaged and empowered citizens. This vision inspires every decision we make and reminds us of what’s possible when we work together.

I’ll leave you tonight with these words to inspire us as we take on the challenges of 2025:

"You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take." – Wayne Gretzky

Let this be a reminder that courage and action are the keys to turning our dreams into reality. Together, let’s aim high and make this year one of bold steps and significant progress.

Thank you, and let’s get to work!
