Rain Can’t Stop the Movement – Week One of Move with the Mayor® Sets the Tone

By Mayor Derrick R. Wood

We kicked off the first Monday of Move with the Mayor® in the best way possible — with movement, connection, and a powerful reminder of why this challenge matters.

Despite the rain, our community showed up and showed out. We pivoted indoors to a space right next to the park and got in a solid 45 minutes of full-body movement with SOS Fit leading the charge. Huge thanks to Coach Freddy, Coach B, and Coach D for bringing the energy, rhythm, and motivation.

We rotated through five fitness stations, working our whole bodies and pushing through the sweat together. But the highlight wasn’t just the workout — it was how we closed out with 22 push-ups in honor of the veterans we lose to suicide each day. That number is sobering — and it’s the reason why this challenge isn’t just about fitness. It’s about life.

Movement Is Mental Health

Movement is more than physical — it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual.

When we move, we release stress, elevate our mood, and reconnect with ourselves and others. It helps us carry what we’re feeling, especially when words fall short. After the week I’ve had, I needed that movement more than ever — and I’m grateful to have shared it with my community.

Wellness Champion of the Week

We’re proud to spotlight our very first Wellness Champion of the season: Ms. Michelle Jordan!

She showed up, gave maximum effort, and even pushed me to keep going. Her energy and determination were a true inspiration to everyone there. Thank you, Michelle — you set the bar!

See You Next Monday – Rain or Shine

We’re keeping the momentum going next week with One with Ebony on Monday, May 12 at 7 PM at Ginn Memorial Park. Ebony will lead us through a powerful session focused on breath, balance, and mindfulness.

Bring your yoga mat. Bring a friend. And bring your commitment to your own healing.

And yes — we have a weather plan. Don’t let rain stop your growth.

Keep the Push-Up Challenge Going

If you’re joining the 22 push-ups a day challenge for veteran suicide awareness, tag me at #MoveWithMayorWood and help spread the word. Let’s honor those we’ve lost by moving forward with purpose.

To everyone who came out in the rain — thank you. This is just the beginning. Let’s move, Dumfries.
