TOWN OF DUMFRIES, VA – 

“For over 50 years, Historic Dumfries Virginia, Inc. has been a vital partner in preserving our town’s history. Their stewardship of the Weems-Botts Museum, the Lockett House, and Merchant Park has been invaluable in sharing the story of Virginia’s oldest chartered town with generations of residents and visitors.

The Town Council recently voted to transition these properties under direct Town management following a legal review that determined prior agreements with HDVI were not valid under Virginia law. This step is about strengthening accountability, ensuring long-term preservation, and aligning these historic assets with our 2044 Destination Dumfries vision — a plan focused on preserving our heritage while building a vibrant and sustainable future for the community.

It is important to emphasize that this is not an eviction of Historic Dumfries. Their legacy is deeply valued, and their voice will continue to play a role in this next chapter. To that end, the Town is establishing a Historic Dumfries Advisory Committee to ensure HDVI and other community stakeholders remain actively involved in shaping programming and preservation efforts going forward.

While I supported the goal of ensuring these properties are cared for and aligned with our long-term vision, I voted ‘no’ on this action because I believe this process should have begun with a roundtable discussion and collaborative dialogue with Historic Dumfries and community stakeholders. The process matters as much as the outcome, and I remain committed to rebuilding that collaboration as we move forward.

Historic Dumfries Virginia, Inc. has been — and will continue to be — an important part of our town’s story. This transition marks a new chapter, one that I hope will honor their legacy and strengthen our shared commitment to preserving Dumfries’ history for generations to come.”
